Sheet metal gauge chart
A sheet metal gauge number stands for a thickness, and the thickness depends on the metal: 16 gauge is .0598 in (1.52 mm) in carbon steel, .0625 in (1.59 mm) in stainless and .0635 in (1.61 mm) in galvanized steel. A higher gauge number is thinner. Aluminum is usually ordered by decimal thickness instead.
Steel, stainless and galvanized gauge thickness
Each metal has its own gauge table, so always check which one a drawing means. Carbon steel uses the Manufacturers' Standard Gauge; stainless and galvanized steel have their own. Steel weights are per square foot of sheet.
| Gauge | Steel in | Steel mm | Steel lb/ft² | Stainless in | Stainless mm | Galvanized in | Galvanized mm |

Weight per square foot is thickness in inches times 41.82 for carbon steel, the figure the Manufacturers' Standard Gauge is built on. Stainless weighs slightly more or less depending on the grade; ask the supplier.
Aluminum thickness
Aluminum sheet is normally ordered by its decimal thickness: .040, .063, .080, .090, .125, .190 in and so on, then plate in fractions from 1/4 in. When someone does give aluminum a gauge, it is usually the Brown & Sharpe (American Wire Gauge) scale, which is thinner than steel's at the same number.
| Gauge | Inches | Millimeters | Nearest common decimal |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | .1019 | 2.59 | .100 in |
| 12 | .0808 | 2.05 | .080 in |
| 14 | .0641 | 1.63 | .063 in |
| 16 | .0508 | 1.29 | .050 in |
| 18 | .0403 | 1.02 | .040 in |
| 20 | .0320 | 0.81 | .032 in |
| 22 | .0253 | 0.64 | .025 in |
| 24 | .0201 | 0.51 | .020 in |
Standard sheet sizes
Sheet and plate are sold in a handful of standard sizes, width by length. A nest is usually laid out across the full width so what is left is one clean drop off the end.
